Understanding Gum Disease and How We Treat It

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and supporting tissues around your teeth, caused by bacteria in plaque that hardens into tartar. Gingivitis (early gum disease) shows up as red, swollen, or bleeding gums and can usually be reversed with proper care. When left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis (a deeper infection affecting the bone holding your teeth in place), which requires more involved treatment to stabilize.

At Borderview Family Dental, we use digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to detect gum issues at the earliest possible stage. Our approach to gum disease treatment in Blaine, WA centers on conservative, personalized care. We tailor each plan to the severity of your condition, whether that means a deeper cleaning, targeted therapy, or ongoing maintenance to keep your smile on track.

  • Gum disease is largely preventable with early care
  • Nearly half of U.S. adults over 30 have some form of gum disease
  • Routine cleanings remove tartar your toothbrush cannot reach
  • Transformations That Last

Watch real patients share how their dental journey restored not just their smiles, but their quality of life. These personal stories capture the relief and joy that come with comprehensive, caring treatment.

Is Gum Disease Treatment Right for You?

Patients often wonder whether their symptoms warrant a visit. The reality is that gum disease affects a wide range of people, and many don’t realize they have it until a checkup reveals the early signs. Catching it early gives you the best chance of a full recovery.
  • Notice bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth
  • Have persistent bad breath that doesn't improve with brushing
  • Want to protect your teeth from future loss or damage
  • Are pregnant, diabetic, or have a family history of gum issues
  • Haven't had a professional cleaning in over a year
  • Not Sure If You Qualify?

It’s common to be uncertain about whether you need gum disease treatment. A consultation gives us the chance to evaluate your gum health closely and recommend a plan that fits your specific needs.

What to Expect During Gum Disease Treatment

Many of our patients tell us they expected the process to be uncomfortable and were relieved to find it manageable and straightforward. Every step is designed around your comfort, with clear communication about what’s happening and why.
    1

    Comprehensive Evaluation

We start with a thorough exam of your gums, measuring pocket depths and using digital X-rays to check the health of the bone beneath. Intraoral camera images let you see what we see, so you understand exactly where the concerns are. By the end of this visit, you'll have a clear picture of your gum health.

    2

    Personalized Treatment

Plan Based on what we find, we walk you through your options and recommend a plan that matches the severity of your condition. Conservative care is always our first approach. You'll know what each step involves, what it costs, and how it fits your schedule before we move forward.

    3

    Deep Cleaning Therapy

During treatment, we gently remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, smoothing the root surfaces so your gums can heal and reattach. Local anesthetic keeps the area comfortable, and our hygienist works at a pace that suits you. Most patients are surprised by how gentle the process feels.

    4

    Ongoing Maintenance

After active treatment, we schedule follow-up visits to keep your gum health on track. These maintenance cleanings are more frequent than standard checkups and help prevent the condition from returning. You'll leave each appointment confident that your smile is protected for the long term.

    Gum Disease Treatment FAQs

Questions about gum disease are common, and we’re happy to walk you through anything that’s on your mind. Below are some of the things patients ask us most often. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, please reach out anytime.

How do I know if I have gum disease?

Common signs include red or swollen gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, gums that pull away from your teeth, and loose teeth. Many people don’t notice symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular checkups matter so much.
For most patients, the answer is no. We use local anesthetic during deeper cleanings to keep the treated area comfortable. You may feel some pressure or mild sensitivity afterward, but most people describe the experience as much easier than they expected going in.
Early gum disease (gingivitis) is often fully reversible with professional cleaning and consistent home care. More advanced gum disease can be managed and stabilized but not completely reversed, which is why catching it early makes such a meaningful difference in your long-term outcome.
A standard deep cleaning is usually completed in one or two visits, depending on the severity of the condition. After active treatment, ongoing maintenance visits typically happen every three or four months to keep your gums healthy and prevent the issue from progressing.
Many dental insurance plans cover periodontal care, though specific coverage varies by plan. Our team will review your benefits with you upfront so there are no surprises. We also offer flexible payment options and an in-house membership plan for patients without insurance.
Untreated gum disease can lead to bone loss around your teeth, gum recession, and eventually tooth loss. Research has also linked advanced gum disease to broader health concerns like heart disease and diabetes complications. Early treatment helps you avoid both dental and systemic consequences.
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, marked by inflammation and occasional bleeding. It’s typically reversible with proper care. When it progresses to periodontitis, the infection begins to affect the bone supporting your teeth, requiring more involved treatment to bring it under control.
Yes. With consistent home care and regular professional cleanings, most patients keep their gums healthy over the long term. Brushing twice daily, flossing, and attending maintenance visits every few months are the cornerstones. We’ll show you techniques tailored to your mouth and habits.
In most cases, no. Our team handles the majority of gum disease treatment in-house, including deeper cleanings and ongoing maintenance. For advanced cases that may require surgical intervention, we’ll refer you to a trusted periodontist and coordinate your care every step of the way.
For patients with healthy gums, every six months is standard. If you’ve been treated for gum disease, we typically recommend more frequent visits, usually every three or four months. This schedule helps prevent the condition from returning and catches any changes early.

Real Stories from the Smiles We See Every Day

Our patients often tell us they feel genuinely cared for, not just treated. Their words reflect the comfort, confidence, and trust you can expect.
From check in to check out, everyone was very nice and friendly. The hygienist was very thorough and very nice. The doctor said that everything looked great and that she didn’t need to do anything special after the cleaning done by the hygienist. Checking out was done with a good explanation of what was done and how the billing would be processed. All was done very quickly and professionally
