Does That Tooth Sensitivity Sound Familiar?

Tooth decay often shows up quietly at first, then makes itself known in ways that affect your daily life. If any of these signs feel familiar, you’re not alone, and the solution is more straightforward than you might think.
  • Sharp pain when biting down
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks
  • Visible dark spots on your teeth
  • Avoiding sweets you used to enjoy
  • Food keeps catching in one spot
  • Worrying about damage getting worse
  • If you recognize any of these signs, treatment can be simpler than you imagine. Catching decay early keeps everything straightforward.

What Happens When Cavities Go Untreated

  • Decay Spreads Deeper

Small cavities grow larger and eventually reach the tooth's inner nerves.

  • Sensitivity Worsens

Mild discomfort grows into sharp pain that disrupts eating and daily activities.

  • Treatment Becomes Complex

Untreated decay often requires root canal treatment to save the infected tooth.

  • Higher Costs Later

Delayed care typically requires more involved procedures and higher overall costs.

  • Tooth Loss Becomes

Possible Severe decay can damage teeth beyond saving, leading to extraction.

  • Infection Risk Climbs

Bacteria reaching the tooth's pulp can cause painful infections requiring urgent care.

  • Acting now means a simpler visit and a stronger, healthier tooth.

How Tooth-Colored Fillings Restore Your Smile

A dental filling repairs the damage caused by decay, returning your tooth to its natural shape and function. We use tooth-colored composite material, made from a blend of resin and fine glass particles, which bonds directly to the tooth structure. This material blends with the surrounding enamel so well that fillings are virtually undetectable when you smile or speak.

At Borderview Family Dental, we use intraoral cameras and digital imaging to identify decay early, often before you feel any symptoms. Our approach to dental fillings in Blaine, WA emphasizes preserving as much of your natural tooth as possible, which keeps your smile strong for the long term. Each filling is shaped and polished to match your bite precisely.

  • Composite material bonds chemically to tooth structure
  • Treatment typically completed in one visit
  • Tooth decay affects roughly 90% of US adults (CDC)
  • Transformations That Last

Watch real patients share how their dental journey restored not just their smiles, but their quality of life. These personal stories capture the relief and joy that come with comprehensive, caring treatment.

Who Benefits Most From Dental Fillings

Wondering if a filling is right for your situation? Most adults and children with cavities are good candidates for tooth-colored fillings. Many patients are surprised to learn that even older silver fillings can often be replaced with composite material for a more natural look.
  • Have a small to medium-sized cavity that needs treatment soon
  • Want to replace old silver fillings with natural-looking material
  • Are dealing with mild tooth sensitivity or discomfort when eating
  • Notice visible discoloration or dark spots on a tooth surface
  • Prefer mercury-free options that look natural for your dental restorations
  • Not Sure If You Need One?

It’s completely normal to wonder if a filling is the right choice. A short examination will identify any decay and help us recommend the most conservative treatment for your specific situation.

What to Expect During Your Filling Appointment

Many patients tell us that getting a filling was easier than they anticipated, often saying they felt comfortable throughout. Our process is designed with your comfort in mind, using gentle techniques and modern materials at every step.
    1

    Comfortable Numbing

You'll settle into the chair while we apply a topical gel that numbs the area before any injection. The local anesthetic ensures you won't feel pain during your treatment, only gentle pressure. Most patients are surprised by how quickly this step passes, leaving the treated area completely numb and ready for care.

    2

    Decay Removal and Preparation

Using precise tools, we carefully remove the decayed portion of your tooth while preserving as much healthy structure as possible. The area is then cleaned thoroughly to eliminate bacteria. Throughout this step, you'll feel only gentle pressure, never discomfort, and the entire process usually takes just a few minutes per tooth.

    3

    Filling Placement and Polish

The composite material is layered into the prepared area, then hardened with a specialized curing light. We shape and polish the filling so it matches your natural tooth contours and bite perfectly. Once complete, you'll leave with a restored tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like before.

    Common Filling Questions Answered

Got questions about getting a filling? You’re not alone. Our patients ask thoughtful questions every day, and we’re always happy to help you feel informed and prepared. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often about composite fillings.

    Do fillings hurt?

Not really. Local anesthetic completely numbs the area, so you’ll feel pressure but no pain during treatment. Most patients describe the appointment as easier than expected. If you have dental anxiety, let us know and we’ll take extra steps to keep you comfortable throughout.
With good care, composite fillings typically last between seven and ten years, sometimes longer. Brushing twice daily, flossing, and regular checkups make a big difference. Avoiding habits like chewing ice or grinding your teeth also helps extend the life of your filling significantly.
Modern composite fillings are remarkably strong and well-suited for most teeth, including back molars. They bond directly to your tooth, which actually adds support. For very large cavities in molars, your dentist will recommend the best material based on your specific situation and bite forces.
Yes, the filling sets completely before you leave the office. However, wait until the numbness wears off, usually one to two hours, before eating solid food. This prevents accidentally biting your cheek or tongue. Hot beverages should also wait until full sensation returns.
No. Tooth-colored fillings are matched to the exact shade of your surrounding teeth, making them virtually invisible. Even people standing close to you won’t be able to tell which tooth was treated. This is one reason patients love switching from older silver fillings to composite.
Some sensitivity to cold or pressure is normal for a few days after treatment, especially with larger fillings. This usually fades on its own. If sensitivity lasts more than a week or feels severe, give us a call and we’ll check the filling for adjustments.
Yes, and many of our patients choose this option. Replacing old fillings can improve both the look and health of your teeth. We carefully remove the previous material and place a tooth-colored filling that blends seamlessly with your natural smile.
Common signs include tooth sensitivity, mild pain when biting, visible dark spots, or food consistently catching in one area. However, many cavities cause no symptoms early on, which is why regular checkups matter. Our exams catch decay before you notice anything wrong.
When decay is extensive, a filling may not provide enough support, and we might recommend a crown instead. This depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains. We’ll explain your options clearly during your visit so you can choose the right approach for your tooth.
Composite fillings are mercury-free and made from biocompatible materials that have been studied extensively. They bond chemically to your tooth, creating a tight seal against bacteria. Many patients prefer composite specifically because it eliminates concerns associated with older metal restorations.

By far the best Dentist I have been to in my 30 years of life. The office staff are very nice, pleasant to talk to, and professional. They know their stuff! The office is very clean and relaxing. And I’m serious, everyone is so nice and personable. They let you watch a show on Netflix while they fix your chompers. Last but definitely not least, they do great work and are very thorough and caring throughout the process. What more could you want? Me, my wife, and my 3 year old go here for our dental appointments and will continue to go here for as long as we live in the area. Absolutely recommend this dental office.

Friendly front desk greetings! And, Dental Assistant Melissa, walked me to “The Chair”! She explained stuff with a clever and natural sense of humor. I laughed a lot…something I don’t do at the Dentist office! It was calming and I appreciate being included. Melissa owns a contagious sense of humor which translates into patient-at-ease! Dr Mandy and Melissa were in sync, with proficiency I recognized as ‘Teamwork’. The procedure was executed well and on time. An enjoyable Dental experience for me. How often do you hear “ENJOY” and “DENTAL” in the same sentence? Thank you! Jan W.

A Dental Diary Part 1: March 10, 2026 A Jewel in Blaine: The Right Dental Team at Borderview Family Dental I had an amazing experience at Borderview Family Dental. Dr. Gagan Sandhu and his team are all fantastic. At the front desk, Daryna welcomed me and made filling out the patient forms very easy with their high-tech iPad setup. Viktoriya then walked me through everything financially, clearly explaining it all. Dr. Sandhu himself was extremely professional, carefully explaining my future dental needs and answering all my questions. Kirsten was also great with my X-rays. In general, I have a bad gag reflex, but she made me feel as comfortable as possible. Thank you, Kirsten! :) Even the room itself was wonderful, with a huge window showing a beautiful green forest view, no need for TV or other entertainment! Blaine is a small community, so having a dental team like this is a real jewel. Kudos to the Dental Team at Borderview Family Dental! I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for excellent dental care. Part 2: April 21, 2026 Technology, Teamwork, and a Surprisingly Comfortable Crown Procedure Today, I had my second dentist appointment. As I had expected, I was greeted by Viktoriya, and after only a few minutes’ delay, Melissa, the dental assistant, welcomed me and took me to the treatment room. It was a busy morning at the clinic, but everything still moved along smoothly. Soon, Dr. Sandhu joined us, completing the patient-dentist-assistant triangle. The dental crown procedure on a major molar turned out to be surprisingly comfortable. Thanks to Dr. Sandhu and Melissa, along with the help of an Isolite retractor, I, as someone with a highly sensitive gag reflex, was able to go through the entire procedure without any gagging whatsoever. It was the first time I had ever experienced the use of an Isolite retractor, and I found it remarkable. I asked Dr. Sandhu whether it was a new invention or device. He told me that it had actually been around for quite a few years. That made me wonder why, after all these years, this was the first time I had seen it used. His response was that the reason may simply be the cost of the device. The entire procedure was efficient and impressively well coordinated. Thanks to the Isolite retractor, along with the seamless teamwork between Dr. Sandhu and Melissa, the experience was far better than I had anticipated. What a difference proper technology makes when it is paired with a skilled and professional team. Part 3 May 12, 2026 Precision and Efficiency I returned to Borderview Family Dental for the final stage of my crown procedure. The clinic was busy, yet everything remained calm, organized, and efficient. Viktoriya and another front staff member (whose name I unfortunately did not catch) greeted me warmly, and Melissa quickly guided me to the treatment room. Melissa removed the temporary crown, and Dr. Sandhu cemented the permanent one with remarkable precision. The fit was perfect on the first attempt, with no anesthetic, drilling, filing, reshaping, or bite adjustment needed. I was out of the clinic in less than 30 minutes. Once again, the teamwork, precision, and professionalism were outstanding. Kudos to Dr. Sandhu, Melissa, Kirsten, Lisa, Gabby, Daryna, Viktoriya, and the entire Borderview Family Dental team. Cheers, Frazer
